NQT Programme Overview

By purchasing the complete programme, you will receive 14 fully resourced training sessions with suggestions for follow up activities that could become the focus for further  sharing good practice meetings. In addition, you will receive a termly review meeting to adapt for delivery 4 times over the NQT year and a tracking sheet to monitor your teachers’ development against the Teaching Standards. The expectation is that subject knowledge is developed alongside the pedagogical reflections and guidance for setting this up appears in the ‘Be an Expert’ session to ensure expert practitioners all contribute to your school’s NQT Induction Programme.

This course can be adapted, changed and personalised to suit your school context and calendar -it offers a fantastic starting point for bringing your Induction Programme in line with the new standards. 1. Getting Started PowerPoint

Session aims:

The aim of this session is to  develop teachers’ understanding of the Ofsted criteria for ‘Quality of Teaching’ and ‘Pupil Achievement’ and how it links to the Teaching Standards. The session will generate discussions about what outstanding teaching and achievement looks like in preparation for teachers’ first observations of the year.

Session outcomes:

By the end of the session teachers will have reviewed their targets from the end of their initial teacher training year, set themselves clear targets for each standard and mapped the teaching standards against the good/ outstanding Ofsted criteria so they can see the clear link between their training year and their career in teaching.

Teachers will complete a self-reflection against the  8  standards which should provide initial bench mark data that can be used to track progress over the rest of the year.

2. Be An Expert PowerPoint

Session aims:

In this session, teachers will analyse their curriculum maps and review the different topics they are expected to  teach by the end of the year. From this activity, teachers will be pro active in identifying gaps in their subject knowledge so their mentor and team can build in support for these topics in advance of them being taught.

Session outcomes:

The information from the audit needs to be shared with Heads of Department and mentors to provide subject specific input in advance of the units being taught. These sessions can be timetabled from the start of the year to form the ‘Be An   Expert’ subject knowledge development sessions as part of the NQT Induction.

3. Challenge and Engagement PowerPoint

Session aims:

The aim of this session is to develop teachers’ understanding of the terms challenge and engagement and  identify that you can have engagement without challenge.  The session will encourage staff to think deeper about the level of challenge they set and the preparation required for groups of learners in their lesson planning.

Session outcomes:

Teachers will identify that sometimes they engage students but do not always challenge different groups of students ;  they will explore why it’s essential to adapt planning accordingly.  They  think wider about what an outstanding lesson looks like and the subject knowledge skill required to teach different groups in the classroom at an  outstanding level.

4. Effective Marking PowerPoint

To develop teacher’s understanding of the role of marking to personalise learning and the importance of making marking an intrinsic part of the lesson and into weaving it into the learning process. Teachers will look reflect on student reactions to formative comments and reflect on the quality of their own written comments. This session has suggested sharing good practice follow up ideas.

Session outcomes:

By the end of the session, teachers will identify that they need to plan time to feedback marking to students, whole class and individually, and to consider what effective informative feedback looks like as well as ways to encourage this more during lesson time.

5. Quality Questioning PowerPoint

Session aims:

For teachers to review the types of questions they ask in a lesson and to plan questions to ensure students are challenged and students  apply their learning in the lesson.

Session outcomes:

Teachers will re-evaluate the importance of planning questions in advance of the lesson rather than make them  up spontaneously. Teachers will reflect on their      current practice and have time to apply targets immediately for further review and reflection by adapting their planning for upcoming lessons.

This sessions acts as a benchmark for teachers to review how they typically ask questions; there is a second session to follow this up looking at specific questioning techniques.

6. Medium Term Planning PowerPoint

Session aims:

The session will remind staff of the power of planning sequences of lessons together and to plan ‘with the end in mind’. They will look at learning as something that spans a number of lessons and write some lessons to use, linking concepts across the series of lessons.

Session outcomes:

Teachers will be encouraged to rethink how effectively they are planning lessons and to see how planning an outline of a scheme or series of lessons will actually speed up planning time and is an efficient and methodical approach to ensuring they stay on top of their increased timetable and workload.

7. Managing Your Time PowerPoint

Session aims:

Teachers will review how they are managing their time and how productively they are using their time at this stage in their NQT year.

Session outcomes:

Teachers will share how they are currently using their non-contact time and to     evaluate the effectiveness of their time management. This is an appropriate session to lead after the first half term or around the time of a review meeting. Staff should set themselves targets to work ‘smarter’ but feel supported in doing so.

8. Demonstrating Progress PowerPoint

Session aims:

This session will remind teacher’s of the value of using whole class  AfL     strategies to ensure ALL students have an opportunity to be involved in demonstrating progress throughout the lesson. The aim is to move staff away from relying on targeted questioning and to adapt their planning to be more inclusive in their use of AfL.

Session outcomes:

Teachers will identify that targeted questioning has limitations when teachers need to show progress made by all learners from their individual starting points. Teachers will  reflect on  the difference between individual and whole class AfL strategies and by focusing on 4 simple strategies, to embed them into their lessons for the coming week.

9. Differentiation PowerPoint

Session aims:

This session encourages teachers to reflect on what differentiation is and consider it as the starting point to planning and not an ‘add on’ when planning.

Teachers will have an opportunity to consider more abstract ways to differentiate including: by time, by task, by start and end points.

Session outcomes:

Teachers will have reflected on how they can differentiate better for at least one lesson and one class and have the opportunity to discuss what the various types of differentiation, breaking the concept that it is always about creating something extra. This session can be followed up with a future sharing good practice session.

10. Challenging Questioning PowerPoint

Session aims:

The aim of this session is for teachers to reflect on the different types of questioning strategies they can use in their teaching. They will have an opportunity to put three different styles into their upcoming lessons to encourage them to use a variety of techniques.

Session outcomes:

Teachers will be reminded of simple questioning techniques beyond targeted questioning and to reflect on where they can use a wider range of inclusive techniques that they can put into their own planning for immediate use

11. Looking Through Lenses PowerPoint

Session aims:

This session encourages teachers to reflect on the impact of their lessons on the  different groups  of learners in their classroom. From the critique, teachers will get a chance to adapt their forthcoming lessons to ensure their lessons are accessible and challenging for all learners.

Session outcomes:

Teachers will  reflect on the different  ‘groups’ of students in their lessons so rather than view their lessons through their professional eyes, they are viewing it as different types of learners. Teachers will identify groups of students they may not target effectively and have an opportunity to share good practice and use subtle techniques to try and address ‘groups’ of students in an upcoming lesson (which can be reviewed at a later date).

12. Stretching the Most Able PowerPoint

Session aims:

This session will give teachers a mechanism to challenge the most able students in their  classes and ensure they meet OFSTED’s latest guidance regarding progress of the most able. It sets up a process for tracking the highest level subject specific skills against the most able pupils.

Session outcomes:

Teachers will produce a skills tracker that allows them to  track the most able students against the highest level skills in their subject.

It is recommended that this session looks at one year group for all teachers – this could be Yr 9, 10 or 11. This session could be repeated and adapted  for different year groups and followed up in future sessions.

Session aims:

The aim of this session is to equip every teacher with simple and effective strategies to embed Numeracy in their lessons, particularly to measure progress.

 

Session outcomes:

Teachers will be able to use Excel to insert a numeracy/ progress measure in EVERY lesson. This measure can be against skills, confidence or subject  knowledge.

Teachers will have seen a range of numeracy strategies that can be included in all lessons.

Teachers will have prepared one numeracy based activity for use in their  future   lessons.

Session aims:

Teachers will reflect on how many visual resources they prepare in advance of teaching a lesson. Teachers will be encouraged to reflect on lesson structures  that are more pupil-centred and more time-efficient for staff.

Teachers will be given an opportunity  to reflect on how the different types of questioning strategies they can use in their teaching

Teachers are to plan lessons quickly and identify that they do not always need to rely on over-detailed flip charts and they need to develop flexibility by planning less and teaching ‘live’ more.
